Here’s a learning place that you can add to your educational trips! And if you have the love for animals especially the endangered ones, they’re here at the Negros Forests and Ecological Foundation Inc. in Bacolod City. The place is near the Provincial Capitol and Lagoon.
For non-students, the entrance fee is Php20.00 and Php10.00 for students. I suggest that you apply some insect repellants on your skin to protect yourself from insect or mosquito bites that may be present since the place is like a mini-forest.
Visit the place with your family and learn how to help save these endangered species. They’re part of the cycle of life. One can not live without the other. And we humans are part of that cycle.
Visayan Tarictic Hornbill (Tularik) – They feed on fruits, but sometimes feed on small insects. They have a vital role in the forest regeneration because they help in pollination and spreading of seeds.
Blue-naped Parrot (Pikoy) – Found only in the Philippines, this beauty is fast declining in numbers because of heavy hunting for pet trade and the destruction of their forest homes.
Visayan Spotted Deer (Usa) – One of the most threatened deer species in the world. Now, extinct in the islands of Cebu, Guimaras and Masbate and found only in the remaining forest patches of Negros and Panay Islands.
Visayan Warty Pig (Baboy Talunon) – They are considered the most threatened wild pig species in the world.
Philippine Eagle Owl (Kuwago) – The largest Philippine owl found only in Luzon, Samar, Leyte, Bohol and Mindanao. It is a nocturnal carnivore that hunts rodents such as rats and mice. The destruction of forests threatens their numbers.
Philippine Serpent-Eagle (Agila) – The eagle in the sanctuary was shot by a hunter, badly injuring its wing. It was rehabilitated at the Biodiversity Conservation Center but, it can no longer fly. Many wild animals suffer the same fate or die because of hunting.
Luzon Bleeding-Heart Pigeon (Badlitan) – Aptly named because of the red patch on their chest, they spend most of their time on the ground feeding on fruits and seeds. Their cousin, the Negros bleeding-heart can only be found in Negros and Panay Islands and are critically endangered.
Metallic Wood Pigeon (Balud) - This pigeon is widespread in Southeast Asia. It feeds on fruits and seeds. Just like other fruit eating birds, this pigeon is important in spreading seeds in the forest.
